Ancient Greece 146-196BC Achaean League Megalopolis AR Hemidrachm EF-AU (EF-45)

In Ancient Greece, the hemidrachm, also known as the Triobol, was worth three obols - a drachma was worth six obols. The obverse features the laureate head of Zeus. The reverse epicts the monogram of the Achaean League, sometimes including a wreath or a club, which are both symbols of Heracles. The Achaean League was one of the last major Greek confederations resisting Roman domination. Megalopolis, founded in 371BC, was a key political and military centre of the league. In 146BC, the league was defeated by Rome and thus became a Roman province. Megalopolis remained populated during Roman occupation, but by the 6th century, it was nearly abandoned, however, as of 2021, Megalopolis had a population of 5,344 residents.
