Since 1931, all Canadian circulation coins have been produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. This was not the first time coins were minted for use in Canada, but it was the first time a Canadian government agency had full responsibility for coinage.
Much of the merchandise we offer for sale consists of Royal Canadian Mint coins. Some people with an interest in coin collecting focus on circulation coins, especially those of a rare or unusual variety. Currently, circulation coins come from the RCM facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Other collectors are interested in numismatic coins, which come from the Royal Canadian Mint Ottawa location.
MILESTONES IN THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN MINT
The RCM holds a significant place in Canadian history. We take a look at some important milestones that help tell its story:

1980
The first coin minting facility on Canadian soil, an offshoot of the Royal Mint in London. You can find some of the first coins produced by the original Canadian branch of the Royal Mint on our website if you look under the 1900 to 1909 category of the denomination you desire on the Canadian Decimal Coins page.
1931
The official Royal Canadian Mint gains independence from London as of December 1st. You can find the first coins produced officially by the Royal Canadian Mint by looking in the years 1930 to 1939 on the Canadian decimal page.
1953
The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the first coins from the Royal Canadian Mint to bear her effigy on their obverse. During her reign, Canadian circulation coins would bear four different portraits of Her Majesty. You can find collector coins and sets categorized by year or decade and navigate to them from this page.
1954
The Royal Canadian Mint started creating sets of circulation coins with a proof-like finish specifically for sale to collectors. Proof and specimen sets followed in later decades. These coins are all of a higher quality than average circulation coins. We have these categorized by type and available for browsing and purchase on our website here.
1968
The Royal Canadian Mint started selling special edition dollar coins in their own special cases, originally made of nickel, then silver. We have Canadian silver dollars dating back to 1971 categorized on this page, and you can find older commemorative coins on the Canadian dollar coin page.
1973
The first commemorative coins with unique designs intended primarily for purchase by collectors and not to be used for circulation at all. Sets were produced in honour of the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Such coins are categorized on this page by year and by type.
1976
A new minting facility opens in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Royal Canadian Mint Ottawa is still the administrative headquarters and produces numismatic coins, but circulation coins are now minted in Winnipeg.
1979
The original Royal Canadian Mint building in Ottawa is designated as a National Historic Site. To this day, it offers tours to visitors.
1990
A new series of coins commemorating aviation really kicked off the trend of designing silver collectible coins that are separate from circulation coins, all of which you can find categorized by type on this page, or you can browse by year.
THE PRESENT DAY

HISTORY OF COLONIAL ACRES COINS
Our founders were Cameron Bevers and Todd Sandham, who became interested in coins at an early age and established Colonial Acres while still in high school, naming it after the community where they lived. The young entrepreneurs opened their first retail location in 1996. Due to the demand for an online presence, construction on the website began in the late 1990s.
Today, we have a bigger storefront, a larger inventory, two dozen employees, and conduct a large portion of our business through our website.
