375-18-14 1923 Imperial Bank of Canada $50 Howland-Phipps, Toronto, Legacy Certified F-15 (repairs, edges trimmed)
Founded in Toronto 1873 by the former vice president of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, the Imperial Bank of Canada spread slowly across the country. In 1891, a branch opened in Edmonton, and for many years was known as the most northernly bank branch in all of Canada. In 1875, the Imperial Bank of Canada amalgamated with the Niagara District Bank, and eventually acquired Weyburn Security Bank in 1931 and Barclays Bank in 1956. In 1961, the bank merged with the Canadian Bank of Commerce, to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, now known as CIBC. CIBC is one of the two "Big Five" banks that were founded in Toronto (the other being Toronto-Dominion Bank).
