Great Britain 1804 Bank of England Dollar/5 Shillings Struck on Spanish 8 Reales VF-EF (VF-30)

To supplement a deficiency in British regal coinage, the Bank of England overstruck Spanish American 8 Reale coins with a value of a dollar or 5 shillings. These coins were struck by the Soho Mint, Birmingham, between 1804 and 1811, though all bear the date of 1804.

Obverse: Laureate and draped bust of King George III facing right, with the legend around, and the engraver's initials in raised letters on truncation beneath the neck.
Reverse: The seated image of Britannia facing left, holding an olive branch in her right hand and a spear in her left, a cornucopia and shield bearing the Union flag resting on her right, and a beehive to her left, all within a garter surmounted by a castellated "crown" of five circular stone turrets. Engraver's initial appears in the triangular space between the shield, cornucopia, and Britannia's dress.
