Great Britain 1551-53 Edward VI Shilling S-2482 Very Fine (VF-20)
King Edward VI of England (1537–1553) was the only legitimate son of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. Ascending the throne at just nine years old after his father’s death in 1547, Edward’s reign was marked by significant Protestant reforms, as his regents—particularly Edward Seymour, the Duke of Somerset, and later John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland—pushed England further from Catholic practices. Although Edward showed intellectual promise and had a strong interest in religious matters, he was plagued by poor health throughout his short life. He died at age 15, likely from tuberculosis, sparking a succession crisis that ultimately led to the brief reign of Lady Jane Grey and later the ascension of his half-sister, Mary I.
Obverse: Crowned bust of King Edward VI facing outwards, with a Tudor rose to the left and denomination to the right, legend around.
Reverse: Quartered shield of arms over a long cross fourchee, with the legend around.
