The first United States dollar, featuring the rare "Flowing Hair" Liberty was minted in 1794, and immediately all 1,758 of them were given to the director of the Mint, who distributed them to dignitaries as souvenirs. In 1796, the dollar was introduced at par with the Spanish-American silver dollar (also known as the Spanish peso, Spanish milled dollar, or piece-of-eight), which was in wide circulation throughout the Americas, Asia, and Europe from the 16th to 19th centuries. The US dollar was never overly popular in circulation, and as the $1 note was fully backed by silver dollars kept in reserves, many people preferred to carry Silver Certificates instead of silver dollars. However, Morgan dollars remain the most popular for collectors, second only to Lincoln cents.

Obverse: Capped head of Liberty facing left, her headband adorned with rays, separating "IN GOD WE TRUST", with "LIBERTY" above, and denomination below.
Reverse: An eagle standing facing right on a rock, with wings folded and seen from the back, a branch in its talons, rays behind, "PEACE" below, country and motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" above. The mintmark can be found between the word "ONE" and the eagle's tail.
