The United States twenty cent piece was first proposed as early as 1791 and again in 1806, but was repeatedly rejected. Americans were already familiar with the denomination as the two reales piece that was struck in Spain often passed for twenty cents. As there was a shortage of small change in the western States, the twenty cent piece was produced for circulation in 1875. As it was very close to the quarter in size and value, it failed, and was abolished fairly quickly after it's introduction, though a small amount were produced in 1877 and 1878 for collectors.
