715-24-02 1935 Bank of Toronto $5 Henwood-Gooderham, VG-F

The Bank of Toronto first opened its doors in 1856 in Toronto, servicing mainly merchants, farmers, and those in professions relating to farming (millers, brewers, distillers, etc). Their first branch outside of Ontario was opened in 1860 in Montreal, but they kept their growth slow and deliberate, opening branches in emerging regional centres. In the beginning of the twentieth century, the bank increased their growth and began spreading across central and western Canada. During World War I and World War II, the bank was recruited to help finance war expenditures, and support war bonds. The bank survived the depression of the 1930s, despite some decline, and by 1945 their assets had more than doubled since 1939. In 1954 The Bank of Toronto amalgamated with the Dominion Bank, becoming the Toronto-Dominion Bank.
