550-36-04 1935 Bank of Nova Scotia $10 McLeod-Patterson, VF

The Bank of Nova Scotia (now known as Scotiabank) was founded in 1832 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Until 1882, expansion of the bank was limited to the Maritimes, but the bank moved west and opened a branch in Winnipeg, which later closed. The bank had some success in the American Midwest, with a branch opening in Minneapolis in 1885 (which later transferred to Chicago), and in 1894, with the collapse of the Commercial Bank of Newfoundland and the Union Bank of Newfoundland, a branch was established on the island. The first branch of a Canadian bank to open outside of the United States or United Kingdom was a Bank of Nova Scotia branch in Kingston, Jamaica, to facilitate the trading of sugar, rum, and fish. In 1906 a branch was opened in Havana, Cuba, followed by New York City, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1961, the Bank of Nova Scotia became the first Canadian bank to appoint women as bank managers. Over the years, many banks merged with the Bank of Nova Scotia, and today, it is considered one of Canada's Big Five banks, and is the third-largest Canadian bank by deposits and market capitalization.
