LC-60-11 1820 Lower Canada Bust & Harp Token Uncirculated (MS-60)
In 1825, a halfpenny token was struck in Great Britain on Canadian order. The tokens are known as "Bust & Harp" tokens because of their design. They became very popular among the Irish immigrants of Lower Canada. They soon were widely imitated in brass and competed with legitimate colonial coinage for twenty years. The obverse portrays a bust of George IV in a cuirass, a piece of body armour covering the chest and shoulders. The reverse bears a harp with a frame, incorporating the body of a winged female facing left.
LC-60-11 Variety:
Obverse: The curiass is well defined, the bust is small, there are two locks of hair pointing upwards, and four large ruffles for the shirt frill.
Reverse: Three strings are attached to the first part of the wing. There are nine strings.
Specifications:
Composition: Brass
Weight: 4.2 to 6.8 g
Diameter: 26.3 to 28 mm
