LC-48-17 1812 Lower Canada Tiffin Token AU-UNC (AU-55)

Around 1832, Joseph Tiffin, a Montreal grocer, imported a quantity of lightweight halfpenny copper tokens from England. These were copies of an anonymous English halfpenny struck in 1812 from dies cut by Thomas Halliday. Eventually, the banks refused to accept any of these lightweight tokens as currency and accepted them only for their scrap metal value.

LC-48-17 Variety:
Obverse: Wreath in a clockwise direction. Within the wreath, the acorns and oak leaves are alternating above the head. Nearly all oak leaves and acorns have a stem. The top right laurel leaf is pointing to an oak leaf and is far from it. The face is very ugly.
Reverse: The legend reads "HALFPENNY TOKEN 1812". Eleven cannon balls. The left hand doesn't rest on the bale, but is very close to it. The chignon is close to the center foot of the "Y". The scales are large. There are three daisies in the cornucopia.
