LC-48-2 1812 Lower Canada Tiffin Token ICCS Certified MS-60 BR #961

Around 1832, Joseph Tiffin, a Montreal grocer, imported a quantity of lightweight halfpenny copper tokens from England. These were copies of an anonymous English halfpenny struck in 1812 from dies cut by Thomas Halliday. Eventually, the banks refused to accept any of these lightweight tokens as currency and accepted them only for their scrap metal value.

LC-48-2 Variety:
Obverse: Wreath in a clockwise direction. Within the wreath, the acorns and oak leaves are alternating above the head. The top right laurel leaf is close to and pointing at an oak leaf.
Reverse: The legend has the date only. Most of the cannon balls are below the bale in a pile. The left hand rests between the two vertical cords of bale. Commerce has a long and thin neck. The scales are small and almost horizontal.
