LC-16A1 1837 Lower Canada THS & WM Molson Un Sou Token NGC Certified XF-45 BN
The THS & WM Molson Montreal Brewers Distillers and Un Sou was to an early Canadian token linked to the Molson family, who were prominent figures in Montreal's brewing and distilling industry. The Molson family, founders of Molson Brewery, issued various tokens in the early to mid-1800s as a form of currency to facilitate trade in Lower Canada (modern-day Quebec), where official currency was sometimes scarce.
The “Un Sou” (meaning "one penny" in French), would have been equivalent to one penny or one cent. These tokens were often used for small transactions and would circulate as everyday currency, commonly in taverns, stores, and breweries. The THS & WM Molson inscription refers to Thomas and William Molson, members of the Molson family involved in the brewing business. This token highlights the entrepreneurial spirit of the Molson family and provides a glimpse into the history of commerce and local currency in 19th-century Canada. It’s now a collectible piece, valued for its connection to Canadian brewing history and early Canadian numismatics.
