LC-48-3 1812 Lower Canada Tiffin Token Uncirculated (MS-60)

Around 1832, Joseph Tiffin, a Montreal grocer, imported a quantity of lightweight halfpenny copper tokens from England. These were copies of an anonymous English halfpenny struck in 1812 from dies cut by Thomas Halliday. Eventually, the banks refused to accept any of these lightweight tokens as currency and accepted them only for their scrap metal value.

LC-48-3 Variety:
Obverse: Wreath is in a clockwise direction. Within the wreath, four contiguous oak leaves are above the head. The nose of the bust is very pointy.
Reverse: The legend has the date only. Most of the cannon balls are below the bale in a pile. The left hand rests between the two vertical cords of bale. Commerce has a long and thin neck. The scales are small and almost horizontal.
