LC-48-1 1812 Lower Canada Tiffin Token AU-UNC (AU-55)

Around 1832, Joseph Tiffin, a Montreal grocer, imported a quantity of lightweight halfpenny copper tokens from England. These were copies of an anonymous English halfpenny struck in 1812 from dies cut by Thomas Halliday. Eventually, the banks refused to accept any of these lightweight tokens as currency and accepted them only for their scrap metal value.

LC-48-1 Variety:
Obverse: Wreath in a clockwise direction. Within the wreath, the acorns and oak leaves are alternating above the head. Top right laurel leaf is pointing to an oak leaf and is close to it.
Reverse: The legend has the date only. Most of the cannon balls are below the bale. The left hand rests on the left vertical cord of bale. Commerce has a thin neck. There are large scales, with the right side clearly lower.
