As the last emperor to reign in the Year of the Four Emperors, he founded the Flavian Dynasty, which ruled the Roman Empire for 27 years. After his death in 79AD, he was succeeded by his eldest son Titus, thus becoming the first Roman emperor to be succeeded by his natural son.
Obverse: the head of Vespasian facing right.
Vespasian seated facing right on a curule chair, a symbol of magisterial authority, holding a scepter in his right hand and an olive branch in his left. The text reads "Pontif Maxim", which indicates the title of the highest-ranking religious official in ancient Rome.
