Ancient Roman Syria 41-54AD Antioch Mint Claudius AE 25 Very Fine (VF-20)

Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, born as Tiberius Claudius Drusus in Lugdunum, Gaul (now modern day Lyon, France) in 10 BC, was Emperor of the Roman Empire from 41 to 54AD, and the first Emperor to be born outside of Italy. Despite being considered weak and unfit due to physical disabilities, he proved to be an effective and ambitious ruler. He expanded the empire by conquering Britannia in 43 AD, improved Rome’s infrastructure, and reformed its legal and administrative systems. Claudius was known for his scholarly pursuits and wrote extensively on history. His reign ended in 54 AD when he was allegedly poisoned—possibly by his wife, Agrippina the Younger—to secure the throne for her son, Nero.

Obverse: Laureate head of Claudius facing right, with the inscription "IMP TI CLAVD CAE AVG GER," denoting "Imperator Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus."
Reverse: Large "SC" (Senatus Consulto) within a laurel wreath, accompanied by dots above and below the "SC."
