The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) began operation in 1864 as the Merchant's Bank of Halifax, a commercial bank that financed the fishing and timber industries as well as the European and Caribbean import/export businesses. It expanded throughout the Maritimes in the 1870s and 1880s, reaching Newfoundland in 1895 after the collapse of the Newfoundland Commercial Bank and the Union Bank of Newfoundland. As the bank grew, a name change was necessary to reflect its growth and expansion, so in 1901 the Merchant's Bank of Halifax became the Royal Bank of Canada. As the bank expanded throughout the 20th century, it merged with and acquired banks along the way, with the most recent being the HSBC acquisition, which occurred fully at the end of 2023. In 2011, RBC was the largest Canadian company by revenue and market capitalization. In 2023, it was ranked 38th in the Forbes Global 2000.
