2021 Canada $50 Lake Louise Extraordinarily High Relief Fine Silver (No Tax)
Beginning in late spring, Victoria Glacier's meltwater carries silt or rock flour (fine-grained particles of rock) into Lake Louise, where these particles stay suspended in the water—in fact, the lake's vivid colour is caused by sunlight reflecting off these particles.
If you're hoping to see those turquoise waters in person, you'll want to time your visit carefully. A sunny day is best but the waters also need to have a high concentration of suspended rock flour particles. Peak time is July and August, when glacial run-off is at its highest; September and early October are also good times to visit, but the colour fades as the silt settles and meltwater tapers off.
Turquoise waters, snow-capped mountains and unparalleled alpine scenery—the beauty of Lake Louise is legendary, and this fine silver coin celebrates all the geographic elements that make it one of Canada's great treasures! Never before has the Canadian landscape been rendered so realistically as on this coin's reverse. Its design features an overhead view of the Lake Louise area, and while Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR) technology sends the Canadian Rockies soaring to new heights, beautiful Lake Louise is unmissable thanks to coloured enamel that highlights the crown jewel of Banff National Park.
The 2021 Lake Louise $50 Extraordinary High Relief Fine Silver Coin is the highest relief the Royal Canadian Mint has ever achieved on a 50mm coin! With a limited mintage of 3,000, this coin is sure to sell out quickly. Order yours today from Colonial Acres Coins!
Based on elevation modelling, the coin's reverse features Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR) technology that adds height to this realistic rendering of the terrain surrounding Lake Louise in Banff National Park (Alberta), in the Canadian Rockies. Glaciers and mountain peaks are frosted to create a silvery snow-capped effect. Lake Louise is struck incuse and filled in with translucent colour enamel that mimics its famous turquoise waters. Inspired by topographic maps, contour lines form a field pattern that frames the reverse and continues on the obverse, which features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Specifications:
Item Number: 201103
Mintage: 3,000
Composition: 99.99% pure silver
Face Value: $50.00
Weight: 82.3 g
Diameter: 50 mm

• A Royal Canadian Mint First! This marks the first time Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR) has been applied to a 50 mm coin.
• For a more realistic rendering of the terrain, your coin's reverse mixes sunken relief (Lake Louise) and EHR technology (Canadian Rockies) that adds extra height. All land elevations are based on satellite mapping data and an elevation model provided by a cartographer.
• One of Canada's most photogenic locations, Lake Louise is famous for its turquoise waters that are re-created here using translucent coloured enamel over engraved relief.
• Two RCM Firsts on one coin! In addition to the EHR technology, the RCM was able to frost the top of the mountain peaks and glaciers to give them a silvery, snow-capped appearance.
• The geography theme extends to the coin's obverse, which shares the same field pattern as the reverse's outer rim. This pattern consists of contour lines that typically illustrate relief on a topographic map.
• An R&D Innovation! This mesmerizing combination of topographic mapping, EHR and selective enamelling is the product of close collaboration between our engineering and engraving teams, who spared no effort in their attempt to create the most realistic rendering possible.
Packaging:
The coin is encapsulated and presented in a black Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box.
