2012 $300 14KT Gold Coin - Provincial Coat of Arms- Nunavut
Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's popular series of 14-karat gold coins featuring the Coats of Arms of Canada's 10 provinces and 3 territories.
This 14-karat gold coin contains 58.33% gold and 41.67% silver and has a face value of $300. It has a metal weight of 60 grams and measures 50 millimetres across its diameter. Royal Canadian Mint engravers have created an exceptional reproduction of the Coat of Arms of Nunavut originally designed by Inuit artist Andrew Qappik in partnership with the Canadian Heraldic Authority and the elders and leaders of Nunavut.
The coin showcases the Coat of Arms' distinct blend of ancient Inuit symbolism and European heraldic tradition. Centered in the polished gold field of the reverse, the Coat of Arms features a round shield bearing on its lower right side an inuksuk (a stone marker) and on its lower left side a gulliq (a stone lamp).
In a shaded section at the top of the circular shield, a concave arc of circles represents the Arctic solar cycle. The North Star sits at the top of the inside of the shield. The shield is surmounted by an iglu topped by the Royal Crown granted to all members of Confederation. The shield is borne by a tuktu (caribou) on the left and a quilalugaq tuugaalik (narwhal) on the right. They stand atop a representation of the Arctic landscape upon which is written, in Inuktitut, the motto 'Nunavut Sanginivut' (Nunavut our strength). The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
