2010 Canada $100 14K Discovery of Hudson's Bay 400th Anniversary Gold

For hundreds of years, the lure of inexhaustible wealth inspired many European explorers to seek out faster trade routes to Asia. They sailed south, but when it was discovered that an immense continent lay in the way, expeditions began probing the North in search of a northwest passage.

John Cabot... Martin Frobisher... John Davis... generations of explorers sailed into the frozen unknown, each building upon the discoveries of his forerunners. More than a century after Cabot, Henry Hudson began his quest, plotting a course across the North Pole but impenetrable ice turned him back on two separate occasions. The following year, he explored the east coast of North America where he discovered the Hudson River before returning to Europe.

Then, in April, 1610, Discovery sailed from London (England). By early May, it had reached Iceland. From there, Hudson sailed across Davis Strait and into the treacherous waters known to explorers as the Furious Overfall (modern-day Hudson Strait). For weeks, Hudson and his crew struggled against turbulent, ice-filled waters and fast-changing tides that thrust jagged reefs out of the water.

Finally, at the start of August, the strait opened up. Hudson believed he had reached the Pacific Ocean, but he was mistaken; his expedition was locked in a vast inland bay that looked deceptively like the open sea. The Spice Islands remained ever-elusive, but Hudson had far outdistanced his predecessors. His discovery proved to be of immeasurable value by opening up the continent's interior to England's expanding fur trade.
