With large, razor-sharp fangs, the scimitar cat (Homotherium serum) is arguably one of the most awe inspiring animals of the Ice Age. A number of complete, articulated skeletons found in caves have provided palaeontologists with a great deal of information about the physical structure and abilities of this extinct cat. Fossil remains show a lack of wear on the front and back edges of the serrated teeth (scimitars) suggesting they were used for slashing rather than feeding. It is also believed these imposing fangs were sheathed in tough protective tissue so the cat didn't inadvertently harm itself or its young.
The scimitar cat was roughly the size of a lion, but with a lighter body that gave it more running flexibility than its Ice Age cousins, the sabre tooth cat and American lion. It had a short tail like the lynx, long, powerful forelimbs but poorly developed hindquarters that gave it a hyena-like stance. While most cats see best at night, scimitar skulls have brain impressions indicating it could also see well in daylight, like the modern cheetah.
