2008 Canada $300 Four Seasons Moon Mask 14K Gold Coin

The eminent symbol of life-rhythms throughout the world, the moon represents the grandfather of the Salish people of British Columbia. A supreme protector and guardian of earth by night, the moon brightens the darkness so they can hunt and fish in the twilight. It rules the tides, enabling fish to swim upstream and into their fishing nets.

The moon's unfailing cycle symbolizes life and death, renewal; the power to create new life. The Squamish Nation expressed the history and wisdom of its sacred symbols through its culture and oral traditions. Ceremonial masks and dances were far more than theatre or art. They preserved the very essence of the people's beliefs and ideals from generation to generation.

Today, most masks are carved strictly for their aesthetic value. They are a powerful art form in their own right - one that provides a fascinating glimpse into the cultural heritage of First Nations people.
