Much of Alberta's history took place "in the saddle," a fact that's reflected in the saddle-shaped architecture of the province's premiere sports facility. It's a design that's perfect for the city that hosts the annual Calgary Stampede, a gargantuan rodeo that's hailed as the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth."
With its flowing concave roof, the Pengrowth Saddledome has reduced its interior volume by more than 30% compared to conventional coliseums to create an atmosphere that is surprisingly intimate for a 20,000- seat facility.
Built as the home for the Calgary Flames, a national hockey team, and to host the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, the Pengrowth Saddledome was the first major arena in North America to provide a hockey ice rink to meet international standards.
Today, this award-winning building is the hallmark of Calgary. As a significant venue for concerts and other cultural events, the Pengrowth Saddledome stands as an important guardian of Canadian culture preserving its western roots while nurturing its evolution into the future.
