The two-dollar coin was first introduced in 1996 to replace the two-dollar bill. This coin features an outer ring of nickel and an inner core of aluminum bronze in a distinctive bi-metallic coin-locking mechanism patented by the Royal Canadian Mint. This innovative technology will allow the two-dollar coin to last about 20 times longer than the two-dollar note it replaced. The original design of an adult polar bear in early summer on an ice floe was created by accomplished artist Brent Townsend, who specializes in studies of North American wildlife. This coin is housed in a colourful illustrated folder.
