During World War I, Canadians used the Red Ensign to show their patriotism - a red field bearing the British Union flag and an amalgam of the coats of arms of the provinces. In 1921, King George V bestowed on Canada its own Royal Arms, which replaced the provincial arms on the Ensign. Fast forward to 1965 and, following a national effort, a new maple leaf flag, white bounded by red, was proclaimed by Queen Elizabeth II.
