In 1987 cost-cutting measures were implemented for Canadian currency. It was decided that the dollar banknote would be replaced, since metal coins last for decades compared to brittle paper notes. It took several years to come to production, but in 2005 the “Loonie” was released. Made from bronze and nickel, the design of Robert-Ralph Carmichael, a popular wildlife artist, helped make this into an iconic Canadian coin.
