2004 Canada 50-cent Butterfly - Clouded Sulphur Sterling Silver (#2)

The sight of its yellow wings fluttering about is a sure sign that summer has arrived. The Clouded Sulphur (Colias philodice) is a familiar sight throughout all Canadian provinces and territories, dancing from flower to flower in gardens and open fields. Young males often congregate at puddles or other wet areas, a behaviour that resulted in the common name, "Mud Puddle Butterfly."

Although the Clouded Sulphur looks yellow, it does have a number of distinguishing marks that may appear in a variety of colours. The bright yellow males have a black dot on each forewing and an orange dot on each hindwing with a black edge that is thicker on the forewing. On the creamier coloured females, this black edge has yellow blotches while their spots and edging can also be monochromatic which makes them appear solid white.
