2002 $350 The Wild Rose - Alberta Gold Coin (TAX Exempt)
To paint the desert pink.
Throughout June and July, much of Alberta is awash with the delicate pink of the wild rose (Rosa acicularis). Also known as the prickly rose, the buds of this small shrub appear individually or in clusters of two or three. Their petals fade from vibrant pink to white as the flowers mature to set their fruit by autumn.
These "hips" are a favourite meal for the white-tailed deer and snowshoe deer. Undeterred by the rose's barbs, they leave behind chewed off shoots and broken stems which are easily tolerated by this dainty but hardy rose - the ideal floral emblem (adopted 1930) for a province whose motto is "Strong and free".
Specifications:
Face Value: $350
Mintage: 2,001
Composition: 99.999% gold
Weight (g): 38.05
Diameter(mm): 34.0
Edge: Reeded
