In 1987, the Government of Canada replaced the $1 banknote with a $1 coin. The changes in the coins were drastic, compared to the Voyager Dollar Series and the reverse Voyager design was replaced by the image of the Canadian Loon. This $1 coin was nicknamed by many as the "loonie", and is now known throughout the country as such. This edition of the $1 coin pays tribute to the beautiful Canadian loon and the Queen's Jubilee by the images seen on the coin. The reverse side depicts a common loon swimming against the Canadian shield, a design created by Robert R. Carmichael. The obverse design features two dates, 1952 and 2002 meant to recognize the Queen's Jubilee. This design is found on all coins in this roll of Canada's Loon Dollar Roll of 25 Pieces.
