Ancient Judaea Roman Procurators 54AD Antoninus Felix Under Claudius AE Prutah VF-EF (VF-30)

Antoninus Felix was the 4th Roman procurator of Judaea Province from 52-60AD. Described as a cruel leader and a lover of bribes, during his rule crime rose in Judaea, as well as internal feuds and disturbances, which he put down severely. Felix was accused of using a dispute between the Jewish people and the Syrians of Caesarea as a pretext to slay and plunder the inhabitants; his brother Pallas intervened with Emperor Nero (with whom he had great influence), and Felix escaped unpunished.

Claudius became Roman Emperor on January 24, 41, after the assassination of his nephew, Caligula. Claudius was considered an able an effective administrator. He expanded the imperial bureaucracy to include freedmen, and helped to restore the empire's finances after Caligula's reign. It was during the reign of Claudius that the Roman Empire began its successful conquest of Britain. Some historians believe that he was murdered by his own wife, his niece Agrippina the Younger, at age 63 on October 13, 54.
